"Kara began working with my French Bulldog when he was 18-months old. Oliver went from acting like a misbehaved puppy to well-trained Mr. Oliver in a matter of weeks. She is reliable, trustworthy, timely and caring. Oliver loves her and his buddy Lucca. He spends numerous days and nights with his TBM family. I highly recommend Kara and The Barking Meter."

"I reached out to Kara because I was suffering in a terrible dog walking situation. I came across her name because she had sponsored a Women in Restructuring event and it turned out that we had a mutual friend. From the very first email conversation, I realized that TBM was not an ordinary dog walking company. Perfect! My dog Abbey is no ordinary dog: she has bad joints, doesn't walk well, and needs special attention. None of this fazed Kara or Joey and they assured me that Abbey would be joining in pack walks and walking better in no time. As a single pet parent, I can't tell you what a dream it is to have my life made so much easier by Kara and the team. Abbey also loves to go to camp with Joey. I travel for business and never have to worry that Abbey isn't getting all the love and attention she needs. Abbey and I love every member of the TBM team. Now, if they could just work on that diva attitude of hers!"

"TBM came to us highly recommended by a friend and from our first phone conversation with Kara, we knew that she would be our biggest asset in transitioning our little Shortcake from farm to big city life. Since then, Kara has proved us completely right, providing personalized and thoughtful guidance on everything from getting ready for our puppy's arrival, to crate training, to paying special attention to teaching her how to walk properly on leash - not an easy feat for a stubborn mini Doxie. Kara and her team are professional, responsible, and responsive, and care for Shorty as their own, going above and beyond for our girl. So much so, that when we decided to move to San Francisco, Kara made the decision to follow our Shorty to the west coast and launch TBMSF. We feel so fortunate to have found TBM and wouldn't recommend owning a dog in NYC or SF without them!"

"I have been a dog owner in New York City for well over 10 years. In fact, I have owned three Rottweilers during that time and have always made it a point to be very alert while walking them. As a result, I have observed hundreds of dog walkers on the street and in the various dog parks around the city. From my experience, I wouldn't trust the overwhelming majority of them. I consider myself very lucky to have met Kara while I was at the dog park with my Rottie, Sky. After talking with her, and observing her with one of her dogs, Oliver, I decided to have her walk Sky a few times just to see how it would go. Long story short, I have been an extremely happy client and would absolutely recommend, without hesitation, The Barking Meter."

"When I decided to get a puppy in the Fall of '09, TBM was my first call as I had never had a dog before. I had met Kara as she had many clients in my building and I saw them daily in the elevator. Before I picked up Theo, she gave me advice as to what I needed and how to train a puppy, as well as coming to my apartment the day after I brought him home to help us all get acquainted.

Kara and the TBM staff soon brought Theo into the pack walks. Everyday he looks forward to his trips out with his dog friends. Kara and her team treat Theo as if he were their own. Besides daily walks, they take him to the groomer and the vet and board him when I have to be out of town.

TBM is truly a full service dog care provider and they do it with care and compassion."

"TeamTBM has been taking care of our eccentric dog, Sophie, since the winter of '08. Kara has been consistently amazing at adjusting to our ever-changing schedules and in the level of care and consideration she gives to both the two-legged and four-legged mammals in her charge. Since then we have added a second English Setter to our home, Jack, who joins Sophie on her TBM adventures. Our dogs are always delighted to see TBM and come home and sleep soundly after their adventures! Not an easy task.

I couldn't more highly recommend Kara and her team to anyone looking for excellent care for their canine pal. She is simply the best!"

"I cannot say enough good things about The Barking Meter. I'd tried a number of dog walkers with limited success and then I stumbled across TBM via a recommendation and haven't looked back since. They are kind, respectful and spend the time to get to know each of their clients and dogs. I have a shy dog, who doesn't always love new people coming into our apartment, so we ran into some challenges when switching walkers; however, TBM spent time together coming up with a strategy that worked beautifully and now Leroy practically waits by the door for his walks with them! We first started using their services in NYC and I was devastated when I found out we were moving to SF and would need to look for a new walker. I explored several walking options in SF, but none stacked up - TBM is so accommodating and I always know Leroy is in the hands of someone who cares for him like I would. Needless to say I was thrilled when I found out they'd be joining me on my cross country adventure! They are a fantastic option for anyone who wants their dog to be well cared for and get the exercise they need. And to top it all off, they have the cutest Instagram account so you always know what the dogs are up to! They are hands down the best and I would highly recommend them."

About The Barking Meter

In 2006, Kara Kleindienst moved to New York City after her post-university job on Capitol Hill. Soon thereafter, she met fashion designer Phillip Lim and began walking his dog, Oliver, whose adorable personality inspired her to get her own Frenchie, Lucca. Spending afternoons with these two Bullies sparked an interest in entrepreneurship and a career in the dog industry. Through the encouragement of her parents, in 2007, The Barking Meter officially hit the streets of New York City with a focus on providing the level of care to clients that Kara would expect for Lucca.
Since the beginning, The Barking Meter has teamed up with local businesses -- veterinarians, groomers, dog trainers -- and through these incredible relationships, the k9 concierge took shape. In 2011, Kara’s younger brother, Joey, joined the team. This sibling duo seeks to provide excellence in dog care throughout 15 neighborhoods in Manhattan and Brooklyn and, as of Spring 2015, in San Francisco.
At The Barking Meter, we are a team and this is our family.

Philosophy

THE BARKING METER (TBM) is an elite dog walking service and k9 concierge. We pride ourselves on bringing complete satisfaction to our human clients and their k9 companions.
TBM is founded on three core values:
  • FAMILY: With a sister and brother duo at the head, and a close knit team of devoted staff, each dog that joins TBM is treated like family. These pups form a pack with their walking buddies and our crew takes great pride in caring for each one.
  • TEAMWORK: Humans and dogs share a few basic needs to enjoy a healthy, happy life: affection, socialization, exercise. To accomplish this, it requires a team effort. TBM Owner, Management, and Walker work together to ensure that your four-legged friend thrives within the hustle and bustle of the City.
  • EXCELLENCE: We're here to help meet all of your dog care needs, and we include you - the ultimate caregiver - in the process. We customize our approach to cater to the individual needs of both dog and human: rehabilitation, basic training, vet visits, grooming appointments. You name it, we do it. The Barking Meter is your k9 concierge.
The Barking Meter is a licensed business in New York and California. We are bonded and insured through Pet Sitters Associates, LLC.

Dog of the Month: Jackson

Fun Fact: Jackson was inspired by Chewy's visits to the gym where his dad trained. Through conversation & encouragement, his humans made the jump and brought Jackson into their world.
Favorites: Chasing farm animals, parkour in the apartment, naps by the hot oven, eating mommy's meatballs.
From the Owner: "I love my adventures with Emily and seeing my friends while getting in my daily workout. Sometimes Kara comes over to teach my humans how to handle me and when they travel, it's CampTBM with Uncle Joey and sleepovers with Chewy & Lucca."

Services

New York: Our standard hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 9:00am-6:00pm, and Saturday-Sunday, 10:00am-5:00pm. In Manhattan, we offer our services in Battery Park City, Chelsea, Columbus Circle, the East Village, Gramercy, Greenwich Village, Murray Hill, Noho, Soho, Tribeca, Upper East Side, Upper West Side, and the West Village. In Brooklyn, we offer our services in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn Heights, Cobble Hill, DUMBO, and Park Slope.

San Francisco: Our standard hours of operation are Monday-Friday, 10:00am-5:00pm. We offer our services in Cow Hollow, Marina, Nob Hill, NOPA, North Beach, Lower Pacific Heights, Pacific Heights, and Russian Hill.
At TBM, we believe in the structured pack walk. Our packs of four or fewer allow your dog to thrive in a pack setting while still receiving individual attention from the walker. Your TBM walk is an opportunity for him to socialize, exercise, and bond with humans and canines in a structured, controlled setting. Owners often believe daycare will allow their dog to release their energy, socialize, and come home tired out. In reality, not all dogs thrive in that setting. Often they are exhausted from having to defend themselves and their space all day long (not to mention the bad habits they pick up from other dogs), and we as humans interpret that as being healthily tired out.

In addition to what sets us apart in both New York and San Francisco, there are other key elements that apply more specifically to the San Francisco community. When we opened shop out west in April 2015, we saw an opportunity to bring the same level of service, flexibility, and care to the Bay. Entrusting your canine to TBM means there will be:

  • No dog beaches or dog parks: your pup will join in on a structured pack walk then come home clean and happy while awaiting your return home from work.
  • No cars or crates: your pup doesn’t want to be hauled around for an hour in a hot, stuffy crate every afternoon, so we do the pack walks right in your neighborhood.
  • No weekly or monthly minimums: we understand that life is unpredictable, so we pride ourselves on offering complete flexibility to our clients. Whether you need daily walks, a walk on a specific day of the week, or one off requests, we are happy to be flexible and cater to your individual needs. We will always do our best to accommodate last minute walking requests.
At CampTBM, we believe that your dog should be at ease while their human is off on an adventure outside the City. Your dog can either stay in the home of one of our staffers, or one of our staffers will stay in your home with your dog. Rather than being stuck in a kennel, the dog curls up on the couch, joins TBM pack walks daily, and receives human affection. During their stay at CampTBM, you will receive a daily update and pictures, assuring you that your furry friend is both happy and healthy as they await your return home.

CampTBM is reserved for walking clients only (an average of 10+ walks per month). All TBM dogs must be up to date on their vaccinations.

The Barking Meter is not responsible for injury incurred upon or by a client's dog while under TBM care. Please advise TBM if your dog is inclined to rough behavior and/or should refrain from interacting with other dogs and/or humans.
Available in New York only

Along with affection and attention, dogs crave discipline and direction. As their human, it is your responsibility to mold and shape them into well-behaved, happy dogs. No dog wants to be a menace but, without proper guidance, they will often resort to destructive, ill-mannered behavior. TBM prides itself on teaching our handlers basic training methods so your dog has a confident pack leader and it is our desire to equip you, their primary caregiver, with the tools necessary to be their advocate.

Kara has accumulated a tremendous amount of knowledge about canine behavior and training. She has been mentored by several of New York’s leading dog trainers and now offers her training services to clients who want to work on a specific issues with their dog, providing a better working knowledge on how to act as your dog’s advocate. The decisions you make for your dog teach them that you are their protector, their guide, their leader.

Training sessions span a variety of subjects including but not limited to: walking etiquette, house rules, separation anxiety, socialization with humans and k9s, confidence and calm, value of the crate or den. In addition to working on specific adult dog issues, Kara has designed a puppy training curriculum that will assist first time dog owners or veteran dog owners. Curriculum can include:

  • Crate training: Creating a safe, positive den
    • Placement in a home
    • Use as a training tool rather than a corrective tool
  • House breaking: Providing structur
    • Use of an associated command
    • Use of treats
  • Walking: Leash etiquette
    • Duration of walks
    • Proper tools
    • Socialization vs. exercise
  • House Rules: Setting boundaries
    • Puppy training basics
    • Human as advocate, dog as dog
    • Barking: in crate, during play, seeking attention
  • Socialization: Raising a polite, calm dog
    • The value of pack walks
    • Preventing aggressive, protective behavior
  • Toys: Working tools
    • Teething items; training items
  • Meals: establishing the relationship as provider
    • Using the meal as a means for mental stimulation

Prior to a session, the client must provide an email with information pertinent to the training session. All sessions last 60 minutes. If more time is needed, the client can decide to increase the duration of the session or set up a follow up session. There may be additional travel fees if the client lives outside of our walking neighborhoods. Due to the step by step process in dealing with puppies, the pricing varies as there will be more conversation before and after the training session; the cost covers the time addressing the subject that was covered at the session. Payment due at time of training session.

  • Adult
    • $150.00 per hour
  • Puppy (six months or younger)
    • Single session: $200.00 per hour
    • Pack of three sessions: $500.00 for three hours
In addition to our walking, boarding, and training services, we pride ourselves on serving as your dog’s k9 concierge. What exactly does that mean? Well, that’s up to you, but just a few examples: we will book grooming and vet appointments, transport your pup to and from those appointments, accompany your pup at the vet, or pick up more food or dog bags at the pet store. Anything related to your dog’s care is our pleasure to provide. Just ask.
