THE BARKING METER (TBM) is an elite dog walking service and k9 concierge. We pride ourselves on bringing complete satisfaction to our human clients and their k9 companions.
TBM is founded on three core values:
FAMILY: With a sister and brother duo at the head, and a close knit team of devoted staff, each dog that joins TBM is treated like family. These pups form a pack with their walking buddies and our crew takes great pride in caring for each one.
TEAMWORK: Humans and dogs share a few basic needs to enjoy a healthy, happy life: affection, socialization, exercise. To accomplish this, it requires a team effort. TBM Owner, Management, and Walker work together to ensure that your four-legged friend thrives within the hustle and bustle of the City.
PERSONAL TOUCH: We're here to help meet all of your dog care needs, and we include you - the ultimate caregiver - in the process. We customize our approach to cater to the individual needs of both dog and human: rehabilitation, basic training, vet visits, grooming appointments. You name it, we do it. The Barking Meter is your k9 concierge.
The Barking Meter is a licensed business in New York and California. We are bonded and insured through Pet Sitters Associates, LLC..
Dog of the Month: April
- Fun Fact:
- Henry's curls win hearts. He's one of the inspirations behind his mom's company, Henry & Co, which shares an office with TBM. Henry is solely responsible for introducing our SF Manager, Nick, to our TBM Family. Clearly his curls have magic powers (so don't shave them off, mom and dad!).
- Fantastic Mr. Fox squeaky toy (a gift from TBM), “Kitty balls” (small tennis balls), being held like a baby, British television, especially Downton Abbey - he loves an accent.
- From the owner:
- "We were introduced to TBM from a coworker and instantly knew they were the perfect fit for our special pups!! The Barking Meter has become part our family, embracing Henry and his brother Max as if they were their own, catering to their quirks and unique needs while spoiling them with love and attention. We have since passed their name on to multiple neighbors and friends, who have also been blown away with their services. They make Henry’s life better and therefore, we are forever grateful!"
Founder & CEO
Kara Kleindienst (aka "Kiz")
Kara moved to NYC in the Fall of 2006, after spending 18 months in Washington D.C. working for her California congresswoman. In February '07, she met French Bulldog Oliver Lim, whose adorable personality inspired her. That June Lucca entered the scene and instantly the two Frenchies became buddies. While juggling the responsibilities of raising a puppy, walking Oliver part-time, and working for a non-profit organization serving at-risk youth, her father encouraged her to explore her potential as an entrepreneur. In September 2007, The Barking Meter hit the streets of New York City.
Growing up with dogs, specifically Labradors and Great Pyrenees, Kara understands the need for discipline, exercise, and care: three key components of TBM. Over the last few years, various types of dogs have become a part of TeamTBM -- big and small, fat and skinny, obedient and rambunctious, sweet and aggressive -- and all of them hold equal importance within the TBM family. She implements training and discipline on the walks and works one-on-one with owners to help mold their ideal pup.
As the owner of the company, Kara still spends time on the field as often as her schedule permits in order to provide up-to-date information on how the dogs are doing and what the owners can work on (usually with puppies), offer new techniques to the walkers, and to spend some time loving on the little rascals.
On a personal note, Kara comes from a tight-knit, Southern California family of five. Her parents, Will & Kathy, live in her hometown of Palm Springs with their goofy Golden Labrador, Kawijo (kuh-wee-yo), and middle brother, Willy, practices law in Charleston, SC. The youngest, Joey, moved to NYC in Fall '11 to join TBM as Director of Business Operations. She and Lucca live in Greenwich Village.
Director of Business Operations
Joey Kleindienst (aka "J")
Joey Kleindienst, Kara's brother, moved to New York City in October of 2011. A mechanical engineering graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Joey decided he would not pursue a career in engineering, and chose to join The Barking Meter as the Director of Business Operations. He tends to all the business needs of TBM, primarily focusing on our gradual expansion throughout Manhattan. His technical and analytical background adds an additional dimension to The Barking Meter team, allowing us to continue providing top-notch, personal pooch care. He lives in the Gramercy neighborhood at TBM HQ, and runs CampTBM.
Alfredo "boom shakalaka" Wong-Den (aka "Fredo")
Alfredo joined TeamTBM in the summer of 2011. His love for dogs blossomed when he was four, the year he had his first pet. Since then, he has cared for multiple dogs in a variety of breeds and sizes. Currently he resides in Brooklyn with his two Boston Terriers, Pappone and Mucca. Alfredo believes that his dogs are an extension of himself and he strongly agrees that all TBM dogs should be treated personally -- just as he treats his own. Holding the same philosophy as The Barking Meter, he is honored to be part of the family, which includes your little (or not so little) ones, too.
Matt Baltzell (aka "Bobble Head Brain")
Matt moved out to NYC from the far off land of Boise, Idaho, in pursuit of acting. Having grown up with dogs -- a hyper Cairn Terrier named Sophie and a laid-back Shar-Pei named Bob -- he was thrilled to be hired by The Barking Meter in the Spring of 2013; he needed his canine fix. He's dedicated to giving your four-legged one all the attention and love they deserve.
Lindsay Christ (aka "LC")
Lindsay joined The Barking Meter in November 2013, shortly after she decided to leave a journalism career to pursue her lifelong passion of working with animals. Since then she's fallen in love with TBM and all of its dogs, and is honored to be able to spend her day surrounded by charming and adorable pooches. She currently lives in Queens, but regularly visits her native Long Island to spend quality time with her family dog, Daisy, and canine nephew, Scooby.

At CampTBM, we believe that your dog should be at ease while their human is off on an adventure outside the City. Your dog can either stay in the home of one of our staffers, or one of our staffers will stay in your home with your dog. Rather than being stuck in a kennel, the dog curls up on the couch, joins TBM pack walks daily, and receives human affection. During their stay at CampTBM, you will receive a daily update and pictures, assuring you that your furry friend is both happy and healthy as they await your return home.
CampTBM is reserved for walking clients only. All TBM dogs must be up to date on their vaccinations.
The Barking Meter is not responsible for injury incurred upon or by a client's dog while under TBM care. Please advise TBM if your dog is inclined to rough behavior and/or should refrain from interacting with other dogs and/or humans.
"Kara began working with my French Bulldog when he was 18-months old. Oliver went from acting like a misbehaved puppy to well-trained ‘Mr. Oliver’ in a matter of weeks. She is reliable, trustworthy, timely and caring. Oliver loves her and his buddy Lucca. He spends numerous days and nights with his TBM family. I highly recommend Kara and The Barking Meter."

"New York City can be a scary place especially when you are just a puppy. When our pup Oliver arrived from his birth home in Indiana, we wanted him to have a smooth transition. Finding a reliable dog walker was our top priority. After asking around for weeks, a neighbor in our building recommended The Barking Meter. His praise went way beyond a recommendation: he said Kara was smart, sweet, reliable and committed. He stressed how comfortable he was giving her the keys to his apartment. Knowing that our Oliver expects the very best, we decided to give her a shot. Four months later we now consider Kara and her team extended members of our family. When we leave town Oliver knows he will be in great hands and get the love he has come to expect at CampTBM. Kara continues Oliver's training and provides us constant consultation on behavior, grooming, training and safety. We wanted a dog walker but feel we've picked up a Canine Life Coach. We cannot recommend TBM enough but I do caution prospective clients not to get too close to Lucca & Kara because our Oliver will still expect them to be showing up at our house on Thanksgiving."

"I have been a dog owner in New York City for well over 10 years. In fact, I have owned three Rottweilers during that time and have always made it a point to be very alert while walking them. As a result, I have observed hundreds of dog walkers on the street and in the various dog parks around the city. From my experience, I wouldn't trust the overwhelming majority of them. I consider myself very lucky to have met Kara while I was at the dog park with my Rottie, Sky. After talking with her, and observing her with one of her dogs, Oliver, I decided to have her walk Sky a few times just to see how it would go. Long story short, I have been an extremely happy client and would absolutely recommend, without hesitation, The Barking Meter."

“TeamTBM has been taking care of our eccentric dog, Sophie, since the winter of ‘08. Kara has been consistently amazing at adjusting to our ever-changing schedules and in the level of care and consideration she gives to both the two-legged and four-legged mammals in her charge. Since then we have added a second English Setter to our home, Jack, who joins Sophie on her TBM adventures. Our dogs are always delighted to see TBM and come home and sleep soundly after their adventures! Not an easy task.
I couldn't more highly recommend Kara and her team to anyone looking for excellent care for their canine pal. She is simply the best!”

"I reached out to Kara because I was suffering in a terrible dog walking situation. I came across her name because she had sponsored a Women in Restructuring event – it turned out that we had a mutual friend. From the very first email conversation, I realized that TBM was not an ordinary dog walking company. Perfect! My dog Abbey is no ordinary dog: she has bad joints, doesn’t walk well, and needs special attention. None of this fazed Kara or Joey and they assured me that Abbey would be joining in pack walks and walking better in no time. As a single pet parent, I can’t tell you what a dream it is to have my life made so much easier by Kara and the team. Abbey also loves to go to camp with Joey. I travel for business and never have to worry that Abbey isn’t getting all the love and attention she needs. Abbey and I love every member of the TBM team. Now, if they could just work on that diva attitude of hers!"

“When I decided to get a puppy in the Fall of '09, TBM was my first call as I had never had a dog before. I had met Kara as she had many clients in my building and I saw them daily in the elevator. Before I picked up Theo, she gave me advice as to what I needed and how to train a puppy, as well as coming to my apartment the day after I brought him home to help us all get acquainted.
Kara and the TBM staff soon brought Theo into the pack walks. Everyday he looks forward to his trips out with his dog friends. Kara and her team treat Theo as if he were their own. Besides daily walks, they take him to the groomer and the vet and board him when I have to be out of town.
TBM is truly a full service dog care provider and they do it with care and compassion.”

"TBM came to us highly recommended by a friend and from our first phone conversation with Kara, we knew that she would be our biggest asset in transitioning our little Shortcake from farm to big city life. Since then, Kara has proved us completely right, providing personalized and thoughtful guidance on everything from getting ready for our puppy’s arrival, to crate training, to paying special attention to teaching her how to walk properly on leash - not an easy feat for a stubborn mini Doxie. Kara and her team are professional, responsible, and responsive, and care for Shorty as their own, going above and beyond for our girl. Kara is so much more than a dog walker; she has become a close friend and someone we trust implicitly in every way. We feel so fortunate to have found TBM and wouldn't recommend owning a dog in NYC without them!"

“In the winter of ‘08, I was a dog-lover who had never owned a dog, hesitant to commit to the responsibility of dog ownership. I met Kara in my hallway, where she discussed with me (for over an hour) how to take care of, discipline, train, and exercise puppies. Furthermore, she offered her full support in terms of flexible scheduling, frequent potty trips, extra supply pick-ups, weekend boarding, and obedience training. It was only then that I felt confident enough to get my first puppy, my precious Wesley. Since then, Kara and I have become great friends and our pups Lucca and Wesleyhave become favorite playmates. Kara is not only an excellent, hard-working, and dependable dog aunt to my beloved Wesley, but also an honest, loyal, and caring friend. I could not have done this without The Barking Meter and I will always be thankful for helping me bring my pooch into my life – Wesley has grown into a spunky yet calm, happy, and well-mannered young adult. Without a doubt, I recommend The Barking Meter to any new or experienced dog owner!”
